The invention relates to a solid film-forming dispersant composition which facilitates the uniform dispersion of a solid particulate pigment in a liquid vehicle. The dispersant composition is useful to pigment powder paints and other dry pigment dispersions.
II. The Prior Art
The uniform mixing of solid particulate pigments with the aqueous vehicle in which they are to be applied has long been a difficult problem. In modern day commercial practice, the pigments are normally dispersed by milling a mixture of the pigment and dispersant in a suitable mixer. Thereafter the dispersed pigment particles are added to the vehicle. This process, however, is deficient in that it yields a dispersion which is low in pigment concentration. The pigment distribution in the vehicle depends on the concentration of the pigment in the milling fluid and the state of dispersion which the pigment particles attain as a result of the milling.
The prior art has long recognized the need for dispersants which would decrease the milling time of the pigment, permit the use of lower pigment concentrations in the milling mixture, and reduce the concentration and size of pigment agglomerates. Numerous patent and non-patent publications attest to the extensive efforts that have been made in search of satisfactory dispersants which could meet these requirements.
The present invention provides a dispersant composition and method of preparing a solid dispersion having the above-recited characteristics. In accordance with the invention, a solid dispersion is prepared from an aqueous mixture of pigment particles and a hydrophilic block copolymer having hydrophilic-lipophilic-hydrophilic block sequence units. The copolymer dispersant in the invention has two advantages over prior art dispersants. The first advantage is that a pigment concentrate may be reduced in concentration by up to fifty percent (50%) relative to that in the milling step without a loss in dispersing quality.
